Coimbatore District Collector Kranthi Kumar Pati launched the desilting of Kanuvai Check Dam, a joint effort by local residents and volunteers. The initiative aims to improve water flow and boost groundwater levels for agriculture.

Coimbatore: District Collector Kranthi Kumar Pati inaugurated the desilting work of the Kanuvai Check Dam in Coimbatore on Sunday. The restoration project, undertaken by Kausika Neerkarangal, saw the participation of local residents and volunteers from Pannimadai Panchayat.

The inaugural ceremony took place at the Kanuvai Check Dam site in Pannimadai Panchayat. Collector Kranthi Kumar Pati presided over the event, accompanied by Corporation Commissioner M Sivaguru Prabhakaran, Assistant Engineer of Coimbatore Water Resources Department Irrigation Sub-Division Amsaraj, and Pannimadai Panchayat President P.S.M. Rathinam Marudhasalam.

The event began with a Bhoomi Puja, followed by the Collector planting tree saplings. Kausika Neerkarangal has formed a dedicated Kanuvai Check Dam committee, comprising residents of Pannimadai Panchayat and volunteers. These individuals will work on desilting the check dam every Sunday from 7 AM to 9 AM.

This initiative aims to facilitate the smooth flow of rainwater from the Western Ghats through the Kanuvai Check Dam to the Chinna Vedampatti Lake without soil erosion. The project is expected to raise groundwater levels in the surrounding agricultural lands, potentially boosting farming activities in the region.

The collaborative effort between the local administration and community volunteers highlights the importance of water conservation and sustainable agriculture in Coimbatore district. As the desilting work progresses, it is anticipated to have a positive impact on the area's water resources and agricultural productivity.
