Madras High Court Orders Probe into All Criminal Cases and Allegations Against Isha Foundation

The Madras High Court directs Coimbatore Rural Police to investigate multiple criminal cases tied to Isha Foundation after allegations of brainwashing women at the foundation's yoga centre.

Coimbatore: The Madras High Court has called for details of all pending criminal cases against Isha Foundation for further scrutiny, with the Coimbatore Rural Police instructed to investigate. This decision came on September 30, 2024, during the hearing of a habeas corpus petition filed by Dr. S. Kamaraj, a retired professor, who alleged that his two daughters had been brainwashed into becoming monks at the foundation’s yoga centre.

The daughters, Geetha Kamaraj (42) and Latha Kamaraj (39), appeared before the court and stated they were staying voluntarily at the centre. However, the court, led by Justices S.M. Subramaniam and V. Sivagnanam, found the matter deserving of deeper investigation. The petitioner accused Isha Foundation of manipulating his daughters to renounce their family life, leading to their permanent residence at the centre.

In addition to the habeas corpus claim, the petitioner pointed out multiple criminal cases related to the foundation, including a recent POCSO case in which a doctor at the centre was accused of molesting 12 girls at a local Adivasi Government School. Based on these allegations, the court has ordered a comprehensive investigation and requested a status report on all criminal activities associated with the institution.

The case is scheduled for further hearing on October 4, 2024, as the court delves deeper into the allegations against Isha Foundation.
