Extended Visiting Hours for Lawyers Meeting Undertrial Prisoners in Coimbatore Central Prison

Coimbatore Central Prison extends visiting hours for lawyers meeting undertrial prisoners from 12 PM to 5 PM, effective October 1. The move comes after requests from the Bar Association for additional time.

Coimbatore: The Coimbatore Central Prison has extended the visiting hours for lawyers meeting undertrial prisoners, providing an additional three hours of consultation time. This change, which came into effect on October 1, allows lawyers to meet their clients from 12 PM to 5 PM, instead of the previous 3 PM to 5 PM slot.

The decision to extend the visiting hours came in response to a request from the Bar Association to prison authorities. Previously, lawyers were permitted to meet undertrial prisoners only between 3 PM and 5 PM after obtaining permission from prison officials.

Under the new arrangement, lawyers now have a five-hour window to consult with their clients, significantly increasing the time available for case discussions and preparations. This extension is expected to benefit both the lawyers and the undertrial prisoners, allowing for more comprehensive legal consultations.

Prison authorities are also considering implementing a pre-booking system for lawyer visits. This proposed system aims to streamline the visitation process and potentially reduce wait times for lawyers seeking to meet their clients.

The extended visiting hours and the consideration of a pre-booking system demonstrate the prison administration's efforts to facilitate better access to legal counsel for undertrial prisoners while maintaining security protocols.
