Weavers Urge CM Stalin to Announce Free Electricity for Handloom and Powerloom Workers

Tamil Nadu Weavers' Associations Federation representatives met Chief Minister Stalin in Erode, submitting a petition requesting the announcement of free electricity for handloom and powerloom weavers, a promise anticipated from the DMK election manifesto but yet to be officially declared.

Erode: Representatives of the Tamil Nadu Weavers' Associations Federation met Chief Minister M.K. Stalin during his visit to Erode and submitted a petition requesting the announcement of free electricity for handloom and powerloom weavers.

Kandhavel and Karunanidhi Jaganathan, administrators of the Tamil Nadu Weavers' Associations Federation, personally met the Chief Minister and presented their demands through a formal petition.

Speaking about the meeting, Kandhavel, State General Secretary of the Tamil Nadu Weavers' Associations Federation, said, "We met Chief Minister Stalin during his visit to Erode and submitted our petition. The DMK election manifesto included 16 demands related to weavers' welfare, various schemes concerning small and micro industries, and promises to address the dye waste problem prevalent in the textile sector. We express our gratitude to the Chief Minister for these commitments."

He further stated, "Over the past five years, the Tamil Nadu government has announced various schemes for the welfare of powerloom and handloom weavers. For the first time in Indian history, Tamil Nadu allocated Rs 30 crore in the first phase to modernize plain powerlooms into narrow fabric powerlooms, and this program is functioning successfully."

However, Kandhavel expressed disappointment stating, "While the DMK election manifesto raised expectations among handloom and powerloom weavers regarding the announcement of free electricity, no official announcement has been made on this matter, which is disappointing. We have emphasized in our petition that the free electricity promise anticipated by handloom and powerloom weavers should be released as an election commitment to improve their livelihoods."

The weavers' community continues to hope that the government will fulfill this promise, which they consider crucial for sustaining their traditional occupation and improving their economic conditions.
