“Not 140 — Over 200 Seats Certain,” Says Selvaperunthagai in Coimbatore

Speaking at Coimbatore Airport, Tamil Nadu Congress leader Selvaperunthagai dismissed opinion polls as attempts to “shape perception,” and asserted that the Secular Progressive Alliance, will win over 200 constituencies.

Coimbatore: Tamil Nadu Congress president Selvaperunthagai on Saturday expressed strong confidence that the Secular Progressive Alliance will secure a decisive mandate, predicting victory in more than 200 constituencies.

Addressing media at Coimbatore Airport, he rejected the credibility of opinion polls.

“This is not an opinion poll, but an attempt to impose opinions. People have already made up their minds. There is a clear sentiment in favor of the Secular Progressive Alliance forming the government. We have been consistently saying from day one that we will win over 200 seats. There is no possibility of public opinion changing overnight,” he said.

Responding to a question about opinion polls favoring the DMK, he remarked, “How many seats are they predicting? We are saying over 200. That itself is what we call opinion imposition. According to our calculations, winning more than 200 constituencies is certain.”

On questions regarding differing opinions, he said, “Our stance remains consistent. The past five years have seen good governance. Congress leader Rahul Gandhi and AICC President Mallikarjun Kharge have campaigned extensively. Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin has worked tirelessly across constituencies. This effort will not go in vain. People have already decided who should govern and who should not. That is why we firmly maintain that we will cross 200 seats.”

He further emphasized, “We will not settle for 140. Our view is clear — victory will be beyond 200 seats.”

Criticizing the BJP, he said, “In every election, price hikes are delayed and then implemented after the polls. People have clearly understood this pattern.”

On internal party dissent, he noted, “Every party has its share of dissatisfaction. It is natural for those who did not get opportunities to express their concerns.”

Responding to criticism over translation issues, he said, “We studied in government schools. We translate to the best of our ability. It is unfair to criticize instead of appreciating that effort.”

Concluding, he added, “There are still 24 hours left. Tomorrow is the final day. After that, we will meet and speak again,” reiterating his confidence that the alliance will secure victory in over 200 constituencies.
