Masaorambu Stream Rejuvenation Project: Siruthuli commences Phase II

NGO Siruthuli in partnership with Titan Company Limited and the district administration, inaugurated the second phase of the Masaorambu Stream Rejuvenation Project at Madhuvarayapuram Panchayat in the Thondamuthur block of Coimbatore district on May 6, 2026.

Coimbatore: The Masaorambu Stream is one of the 34 perennial feeder streams of the Noyyal River and carries fresh water from the Western Ghats into the river system. The stream plays a vital role in groundwater recharge, agricultural sustainability, and ecological balance in the region. However, over the years, its natural flow had been obstructed due to dense vegetation growth, sediment accumulation, and blockages along the watercourse.

Recognising the ecological and agricultural significance of the stream, Siruthuli has been continuously working towards the rejuvenation of rivers and streams in the Noyyal river basin. With support from Titan Company Limited under its CSR initiatives and the district administration, the restoration works have focused on reviving the stream’s natural flow and strengthening long-term water sustainability.

During the first phase of the project, implemented in the 2024–25 financial year, around 5.63 km of the stream was cleaned, desilted, and restored. Seven check dams were renovated, and additional water storage capacity of nearly 100 million litres was created. The restoration works transformed the once dry and neglected stream into a sustainable water source supporting agriculture, groundwater recharge, and local wildlife.

Building on the success of the first phase, the second phase of the project was launched in January 2026 and formally inaugurated on May 6, 2026. The latest phase included cleaning and desilting an additional 1.5 km stretch in the upstream region, widening the watercourse, and constructing new check dams to further improve water retention, groundwater recharge, and wildlife conservation.

The project is expected to significantly raise groundwater levels, revive nearby open wells and borewells, improve irrigation support, and help bring nearly 300 acres of fallow agricultural land back under cultivation. Increased water availability is also expected to reduce human-animal conflict in surrounding areas by improving access to water sources for wildlife.

The inauguration ceremony was attended by Anil Chaudhry, Independent Director of Titan Company Limited and Chairman of the CSR and Sustainability Committee, along with Swadesh Behera, Chief People Officer and Executive Vice President of Titan Company Limited. Siruthuli Managing Trustee Vanitha Mohan, members of the Siruthuli governing body, local farmers, stakeholders, and volunteers also participated in the event.

Speaking on the occasion, Siruthuli Managing Trustee Vanitha Mohan said that although the Western Ghats have extensive catchment areas with clean water resources, pollution begins near Alandurai due to sewage mixing. She noted that Siruthuli has been consistently working over the past five years to strengthen water resources near the Western Ghats, increase groundwater recharge, and ensure long-term water security for Coimbatore and its growing population.

Siruthuli expressed gratitude to Titan Company Limited, the district administration, farmers, and local stakeholders for their continued support in restoring the Masaorambu Stream and protecting the ecological health of the Noyyal river system for future generations.
