Man Gets 3-Year Jail Term for Cultivating Cannabis at Home

Coimbatore Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Court sentenced a 52-year-old man to three years imprisonment for selling cannabis and growing a cannabis plant at his residence near Tiruppur. Police seized 4 kg of cannabis during the raid.

Coimbatore: A special court dealing with narcotic substances in Coimbatore has sentenced a man to three years of rigorous imprisonment for cultivating cannabis plants at his home and selling the contraband. The NDPS Court also imposed a fine of Rs 50,000 on the convicted person.

Acting on credible intelligence about cannabis being sold in Suriyankaadu area near Palladam in Tiruppur district, Kamanayakkanpalayam police conducted a raid at the residence of Govindan (52), a resident of Karappalaiyam village. During the search operation, police discovered cannabis that had been concealed for sale purposes. A total of 4 kilograms of cannabis was seized from his possession.

Further investigation revealed a shocking discovery near his house - a cannabis plant growing to a height of approximately 7 feet. The police destroyed the plant by setting it on fire at the location itself. Following the seizure, Govindan was arrested and a case was registered against him under relevant sections.

The case was heard at the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Prevention Court in Coimbatore. After examining the evidence and hearing arguments from both sides, Judge Rajalingam pronounced the verdict on Tuesday. The judge found Govindan guilty of the charges and sentenced him to three years of imprisonment along with a fine of Rs 50,000.

Special Public Prosecutor V. Sivakumar appeared on behalf of the government in this case. The conviction sends a strong message against drug cultivation and trafficking in the region, as authorities continue their crackdown on narcotic-related activities.
