Coimbatore: Karthik, one of the accused in the sexual assault and murder of a 10-year-old girl near Sulur, was allegedly attacked by fellow inmates in the Coimbatore central prison. According to reports, Karthik, who was lodged in the prison under the Goondas Act, has been re-admitted to Coimbatore Government Hospital following the assault.

Karthik from Nagapattinam and his accomplice Mohankumar were arrested for kidnapping, sexually assaulting, and murdering the young girl. Considering the severity of the crime, both were detained under the Goondas Act (preventive detention law) and lodged in prison.

A more polished news-style version of those paragraphs:

According to reports, a group of fellow inmates allegedly attacked Karthik inside the prison premises late on Saturday night. The assault is said to have aggravated his pre-existing injuries and caused fresh wounds.

Prison warders and officials immediately intervened and rescued him, following which he was taken to the prison medical facility for initial treatment. However, as he required further medical attention, he was later shifted under heavy police security to the Coimbatore Government Medical College Hospital during the early hours of Sunday and admitted for treatment.

Prison authorities subsequently informed the Race Course Police Station about the incident. Police have registered a case and launched an investigation into the alleged assault.

Earlier, prior to his arrest he sustained injuries during an escape attempt and was treated at Coimbatore Government Hospital, and after his condition stabilized, he was transferred to Coimbatore Central Prison under heavy security, two days before.
