A multi-state fraud accused who escaped from the prisoners’ ward at Coimbatore Government Hospital while undergoing treatment was arrested within hours by Salem police and handed over to Coimbatore police.
Coimbatore: Bimidu Ajith Kumar, an Andhra Pradesh native who escaped from the prisoners' ward at Coimbatore Government Hospital, was arrested in Salem within hours of his escape. He was apprehended by the Mecheri patrol police and subsequently handed over to the Coimbatore special police team.
Police said Ajith Kumar allegedly obtained details of vehicles listed for sale and uploaded them on the OLX platform as though they were his own. He is accused of collecting advance payments amounting to several lakhs of rupees from prospective buyers by offering high-value cars at attractive prices. More than 30 fraud cases are reportedly pending against him in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana.
He had earlier escaped from a hospital in Andhra Pradesh after being admitted on the grounds of ill health following his arrest there. After arriving in Tamil Nadu, he allegedly cheated two persons in Tiruppur district using a similar modus operandi. Based on complaints lodged by the victims, Tiruppur police arrested him and remanded him to Coimbatore Central Prison last week.
Subsequently, after complaining of health issues while in prison, he was shifted to the prisoners' ward at Coimbatore Government Hospital for treatment. However, on Thursday evening, he managed to escape from the hospital ward, prompting the Race Course Police to register a case and launch a manhunt.
Following the escape, alerts were immediately issued through the police control room to neighbouring districts. A special team intensified the search after receiving information that the accused was heading towards Salem.
In the early hours of Friday, Mecheri police personnel on patrol duty spotted and apprehended Pimmudu Ajith Kumar. He was later handed over to the Coimbatore special team for further investigation and legal proceedings.
The swift arrest of the accused, just hours after he escaped from custody, has drawn attention, particularly as he had allegedly used the same tactic to evade police custody in Andhra Pradesh in the past.
