Southern Railway Adds AC Coaches to Weekly Express Trains

Southern Railway has permanently added AC 3-tier coaches to the Navyug and Himsagar Weekly Express trains operating through Salem Division to meet rising passenger demand on these long-distance routes.


Coimbatore: Southern Railway has permanently augmented two pairs of weekly express services operating through Salem Division by adding additional AC 3-tier coaches to cater to the growing number of passengers travelling on these long-distance routes.

Train No. 16787 Tirunelveli–Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra Navyug Weekly Express, operating via Karur, Erode, Salem and Jolarpettai, has been permanently augmented with one AC 3-tier coach with effect from June 15, 2026. The return service, Train No. 16788 Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra–Tirunelveli Navyug Weekly Express, will receive the additional coach from June 18, 2026.

Following the augmentation, the Navyug Express will operate with a revised composition of 21 LHB coaches comprising two AC 2-tier coaches, four AC 3-tier coaches, two AC 3-tier Economy coaches, six sleeper class coaches, four general second-class coaches, one luggage-cum-brake van with accommodation for differently abled passengers, one pantry car and one power car.

Similarly, Train No. 16317 Kanniyakumari–Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra Himsagar Weekly Express, which runs via Coimbatore, Tiruppur, Erode, Salem and Jolarpettai, will be permanently augmented with one additional AC 3-tier coach from June 19, 2026. The return service, Train No. 16318 Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra–Kanniyakumari Himsagar Weekly Express, will be augmented from June 22, 2026.

After the revision, the Himsagar Express will comprise 21 LHB coaches, including two AC 2-tier coaches, five AC 3-tier coaches, one AC 3-tier Economy coach, six sleeper class coaches, four general second-class coaches, one luggage-cum-brake van for differently abled passengers, one pantry car and one power car.

According to Southern Railway, the permanent augmentation of these services has been undertaken to address increasing passenger demand and enhance travel comfort for those using the popular weekly express trains.
