India Approves First Dengue Vaccine QDENGA; Rollout Expected in 2027

Marking a major milestone in the country’s fight against the mosquito-borne disease, India has approved its first dengue vaccine, QDENGA, for individuals aged 4 to 60 years. The vaccine provides protection against all four dengue virus serotypes and is administered in two 0.5 mL doses given three months apart.

New Delhi: India has approved its first dengue vaccine after the Drug Controller General of India (DCGI) granted market authorisation to Takeda Biopharmaceuticals India’s QDENGA, marking a significant milestone in the country’s efforts to combat the mosquito-borne disease.

QDENGA has been approved for the prevention of dengue in individuals aged 4 to 60 years. It is a live-attenuated tetravalent vaccine that provides protection against all four dengue virus serotypes and is administered as two 0.5 mL doses, three months apart.

According to the company, the vaccine can be administered regardless of whether an individual has previously been infected with dengue and does not require pre-vaccination screening, making it easier to incorporate into routine clinical practice.

Takeda said QDENGA has already been approved in 43 countries across Asia, Latin America and Europe, with more than 32 million doses distributed through public and private immunisation programmes. The vaccine is also recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO) for use in dengue-endemic regions with high transmission and has received WHO prequalification.

The company expects QDENGA to become available through private healthcare providers in India during the first half of 2027. It is also collaborating with Indian vaccine manufacturer Biological E to expand production capacity.

The approval comes as India continues to report a high burden of dengue, with all four virus serotypes circulating across the country. Health experts believe the availability of an approved vaccine could strengthen dengue prevention efforts alongside mosquito control measures, early diagnosis and timely treatment.
