Four Transgender Persons Held for Alleged Extortion, Assault on Police Personnel in Coimbatore

Four transgender persons were arrested after allegedly extorting ₹11,700 from an auditor using threats and later attacking police personnel, damaging a patrol vehicle and injuring a head constable during an inquiry in Thudiyalur.

Coimbatore: Four transgender persons were arrested by the Thudiyalur Police for allegedly extorting ₹11,700 from an auditor by threatening to circulate compromising photographs online. The accused also allegedly attacked police personnel, damaged a patrol vehicle and injured a head constable when officers arrived to investigate the complaint.

According to the police, a 49-year-old auditor from Annur had parked his car along Mettupalayam Road near Thudiyalur on Wednesday night and was speaking on his mobile phone when one of the accused allegedly approached him and lured him to a secluded spot nearby.

Police said the victim was then surrounded by the other accused, who allegedly threatened to upload compromising photographs purportedly showing him with their associate unless he transferred money. Fearing the consequences, the auditor allegedly transferred ₹11,700 through Google Pay before managing to escape.

The victim subsequently lodged a complaint with the Thudiyalur Police, following which a Special Sub-Inspector and Head Constable Selvaraj rushed to the spot to inquire into the incident.

During the inquiry, the accused allegedly obstructed the police personnel from discharging their duties, hurled abuses and pelted stones at the patrol vehicle, shattering its front windshield. They also allegedly assaulted Head Constable Selvaraj, tearing his uniform shirt during the attack.

Selvaraj sustained injuries and was admitted to the Coimbatore Government Medical College Hospital for treatment.

Based on the complaint and the subsequent attack on the police team, the Thudiyalur Police registered cases and arrested Mobeena (27), Magathi (21), Iniya (22) and Orange (21). The four accused were produced before a court and remanded to judicial custody.
