College Student Dies After Alleged Assault in Coimbatore; Five Secured for Enquiry

A 19-year-old college student died while undergoing treatment after he was allegedly assaulted by a group of persons near Malumichampatti in Coimbatore. Police have secured five college students for enquiry and are investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Coimbatore: A 19-year-old college student died while undergoing treatment after he was allegedly assaulted by a group of persons in Coimbatore district, with police stating that the incident was connected to an earlier assault reported at Othakkalmandapam on Monday morning.

The first incident was reported at around 5.30 a.m. on August 10, when a group of persons allegedly entered a rented house at Poonga Nagar, Othakkalmandapam, where Elavarasan (18), a second-year Civil Engineering student, was staying with his friends. The group allegedly threatened and assaulted the occupants and allegedly took away a mobile phone.

Based on Elavarasan’s complaint, Chettipalayam police registered a case. During the investigation, police identified Amuthan (19), also a college student, as one of the persons allegedly involved in the incident.

Later, at around 8.30 a.m., Amuthan and his friend Sriman (19) were travelling towards their college near Malumichampatti when some persons allegedly connected with the group involved in the earlier incident identified Amuthan as one of the alleged assailants.

The two were allegedly intercepted and taken to a ground behind Hindusthan College, where they were assaulted. Amuthan subsequently returned to his room at around 10 a.m.

At around 3 p.m., Amuthan reportedly developed breathing difficulty and was taken to a hospital for treatment. However, he died while undergoing treatment.

Based on a complaint lodged by Sriman, Chettipalayam police registered a murder case. Five college students have been secured for enquiry, while police are continuing efforts to identify and secure all others allegedly involved in the assault.

According to the preliminary investigation, the subsequent assault on Amuthan allegedly occurred in connection with the earlier incident at Poonga Nagar and his suspected involvement in the assault reported there earlier that morning.

Police also found during the investigation that Amuthan had been suspended from the college hostel the previous month following an alleged assault on a hostel cook. His parents had reportedly been informed about the incident, following which the college administration suspended him from the hostel.

Police said the exact sequence of events and the individual roles of those involved were being thoroughly investigated. Further legal action will be taken against those found to be involved based on the evidence collected during the investigation.
