Coimbatore District Dams See Water Level Surge: August 22 Update

Water inflow has significantly increased in Aliyar, Parambikulam, and Sholayar dams in Coimbatore district due to southwest monsoon rains. As of August 22, Parambikulam dam recorded an inflow of 1159 cubic feet per second. Water Resources Department officials have released current water level details of all three dams.


Coimbatore: Water Resources Department officials have reported a significant increase in water inflow to the major dams in Coimbatore district - Aliyar, Parambikulam, and Sholayar - due to continuous southwest monsoon rains. The department has released water level details of all three dams as of August 22.

Aliyar dam, located near Anaimalai, has a total capacity of 120 feet. Following rainfall in the catchment areas, the current water level stands at 62.35 feet. The dam is receiving an inflow of 151 cubic feet per second, while 250 cubic feet per second is being released from the reservoir.


Parambikulam dam near Pollachi has a storage capacity of 72 feet. Continuous southwest monsoon rains have led to increased water inflow from the catchment areas. Currently, the water level has risen to 40.8 feet. Notably, the dam is recording a substantial inflow of 1159 cubic feet per second, while 27 cubic feet per second is being discharged.

Sholayar dam in the Valparai region has a capacity of 160 feet. Due to rainfall in its catchment areas, the current water level stands at 101.68 feet. The dam is receiving an inflow of 774 cubic feet per second. Additionally, 1540 cubic feet per second is being released from the dam, according to Water Resources Department officials.


With the southwest monsoon continuing to be favorable, water levels in these dams are expected to rise further in the coming days. Farmers and the general public have been requested to pay attention to announcements from the Water Resources Department regarding dam operations and water release schedules.
