Coimbatore: A dispute over the price of 20-litre water cans supplied to a bakery in Peelamedu escalated into a violent confrontation, with the bakery owner allegedly attacking the supplier’s son with a sickle. The accused was subsequently arrested and remanded in judicial custody.

The incident involved Padmanabhan, 57, a resident of Pillaiyar Koil Street in Saravanampatti, who had been supplying 20-litre water cans to a bakery near R.J. School on Vilankurichi Road in Peelamedu for the past two months.

According to the police complaint, bakery owner Gandheeban, 38, originally from the Sri Lankan Refugee Camp in Bhavanisagar, Erode district, allegedly contacted Padmanabhan over the phone regarding the price of the water cans. The conversation reportedly turned heated, with Gandheeban allegedly using abusive language and issuing death threats.

Padmanabhan subsequently went to the bakery with his wife to question Gandheeban about the dispute. The argument reportedly escalated, during which Gandheeban allegedly picked up a sickle and threatened the couple.

On learning about the confrontation, Padmanabhan’s son Arun Chakravarthy rushed to the spot and questioned Gandheeban. Police said Gandheeban then allegedly attacked Padmanabhan before turning on Arun Chakravarthy and assaulting him with the sickle.

Arun Chakravarthy suffered a deep cut to his left wrist and sustained significant blood loss. He was initially taken to a hospital by nearby residents and later shifted to a private hospital for further treatment.

Based on Padmanabhan’s complaint, Peelamedu police registered a case and arrested Gandheeban. He was subsequently remanded in judicial custody. Further investigation is underway.
