Valparai Continues to Record Heavy Rainfall; Chinnakalar and Sholayar Receive 76 mm

Valparai continued to receive heavy to moderate rainfall, with Chinnakalar and Sholayar recording 76 mm each, the highest in Coimbatore district during the latest 24-hour period. Meanwhile, the Pillur and Siruvani catchment areas received no significant rainfall.

Coimbatore: Valparai continued to record significant rainfall, with several areas in the hill region receiving heavy to moderate showers over the last 24-hour period.

According to the Coimbatore district rainfall report, Chinnakalar and Sholayar recorded the highest rainfall at 76 mm each, followed by Cinchona at 66 mm, Valparai PAP at 57 mm and Valparai Taluk at 54 mm. The rainfall at Chinnakalar, Cinchona and Sholayar was categorised as heavy, while Valparai PAP and Valparai Taluk recorded moderate rainfall.

The district recorded a total rainfall of 331 mm, with an average rainfall of 14.39 mm during the period. The five rainfall stations in the Valparai region together accounted for 329 mm, or around 99.4% of the district’s total recorded rainfall.

Meanwhile, rainfall was comparatively lower in the Pillur and Siruvani catchment areas. Pillur Dam recorded no rainfall, while Siruvani Dam received 7 mm and Siruvani Adivaram recorded 2 mm.

At Siruvani Dam, the water depth stood at 27.58 feet, against a reported full depth of 49.53 feet. As per DSO instructions, the water level is restricted to 44.61 feet. Meanwhile, the water level at the Pillur reservoir stood at 90.50 feet, with the present discharge recorded as nil.

The latest rainfall pattern shows that Valparai continues to receive heavy to moderate rainfall, while the Pillur and Siruvani catchment areas, which are among Coimbatore’s key water sources, have recorded relatively lower rainfall during the latest period, barring occasional spells of heavier rain.
