Water levels rise in Aliyar, Parambikulam and Sholayar dams

Water levels have increased significantly in dams located in Anaimalai, Pollachi and Valparai areas due to southwest monsoon rainfall. As of August 27, Aliyar dam recorded 63.4 feet, Parambikulam dam 43.28 feet and Sholayar dam 100.68 feet, with controlled water release from all three dams, Water Resources Department officials reported.


Coimbatore: Water levels in major dams across Coimbatore district have risen significantly due to the southwest monsoon rainfall. The Aliyar, Parambikulam and Sholayar dams located in Anaimalai, Pollachi and Valparai areas are experiencing gradual increase in water levels due to continuous inflow from their catchment areas.




The Aliyar dam near Anaimalai has a full capacity of 120 feet. Due to water inflow from southwest monsoon rainfall in the dam's catchment areas, the water level stands at 63.4 feet as of August 27. The dam is receiving an inflow of 466 cubic feet per second. Controlled release of 152 cubic feet of water is being discharged from the dam.




The Parambikulam dam near Pollachi has a full capacity of 72 feet. The dam's catchment areas are continuously receiving rainfall due to the southwest monsoon. As of August 27, the water level has risen to 43.28 feet. The dam is recording a high inflow of 1,597 cubic feet per second. Water is being released from the dam at the rate of 40 cubic feet per second.




The Sholayar dam located in Valparai area has a full capacity of 160 feet. Due to water inflow from rainfall in the dam's catchment areas, the water level stands at 100.68 feet as of August 27. The dam is receiving a very high inflow of 2,107 cubic feet per second. Water is being released from the dam at the rate of 1,578 cubic feet per second, Water Resources Department officials informed.




As the southwest monsoon continues, water levels in the dams are expected to rise further in the coming days. Water Resources Department officials are continuously monitoring the water levels.
