Coimbatore School Bus Driver Suffers Cardiac Arrest at Wheel, Students Escape Unhurt

A 69-year-old school bus driver of a private school reportedly suffered a sudden cardiac arrest while driving near the Ondipudur Railway Flyover in Coimbatore. The bus lost control and crashed into the flyover’s sidewall, but all the students on board were safely rescued without injuries.


Coimbatore: A 69-year-old school bus driver died after reportedly suffering a sudden cardiac arrest while driving a bus carrying school students near the Ondipudur Railway Flyover in Coimbatore. The bus subsequently lost control and crashed into the sidewall of the flyover, while all the students on board escaped without injuries.

The deceased has been identified as Shanmuga Sundaram (69) of Mahakavi Nagar in Irugur, Coimbatore. He was working as a school bus driver at a private higher secondary school in Coimbatore.

According to the information, Shanmuga Sundaram was driving the school bus after picking up students following the end of school hours yesterday evening. When the bus reached near the Ondipudur Railway Flyover, the driver reportedly experienced severe chest pain and collapsed in his seat.

As he lost control of the vehicle, the school bus veered off course and crashed into the sidewall of the flyover before coming to a stop.

On seeing the accident, members of the public alerted an ambulance. Medical personnel who arrived at the scene examined Shanmuga Sundaram and confirmed that he had suffered a cardiac arrest and had already died.

The students travelling in the bus were safely rescued and none of them sustained injuries in the accident.

The East Traffic Investigation Wing police have registered a case and are conducting an investigation into the incident.
