Over 20 Devotees Injured as Van Overturns on Palamalai Hill Road in Coimbatore

Around 22 devotees were injured after the vehicle they were travelling in overturned near the third hairpin bend on the Palamalai hill road in Coimbatore on Sunday evening while they were returning to Palayamkottai after visiting the Aranganathar Swamy Temple.

A group of devotees returning to Palayamkottai in Tirunelveli district after completing a pilgrimage to the Palamalai Aranganathar Swamy Temple in Coimbatore met with an accident on Sunday evening after their vehicle allegedly lost control and overturned.

The accident occurred near the third hairpin bend on the Palamalai hill road. All 22 occupants of the vehicle sustained injuries and were admitted to hospital.

According to police, the group, comprising 22 devotees from the Palayamkottai area, had travelled to the Aranganathar Swamy Temple at Palamalai, which falls under the jurisdiction of the Periyanaickenpalayam police station. They had reportedly arrived at the hill temple three days earlier to undertake spiritual service.

After completing their prayers and rituals at the temple, the devotees began their return journey to Palayamkottai at around 6 p.m. on September 6 in a Tata 407 vehicle.

While the vehicle was descending the hill road, it allegedly suffered a brake failure near the third hairpin bend. The driver subsequently lost control of the vehicle, which overturned by the roadside.

People in the vicinity rushed to the spot after the accident and began rescue operations before alerting the police. The 22 devotees travelling in the vehicle sustained injuries of varying severity.

All the injured were rescued and admitted to a private hospital in Periyanaickenpalayam, where they are undergoing treatment.

The Periyanaickenpalayam police have registered a case and are investigating the circumstances that led to the accident.
