A female elephant found injured after an iron wire lodged around its left foreleg in the Sirumugai forest range was found dead on Tuesday. The elephant was treated on September 6 and had since been monitored by forest staff. A post-mortem examination is scheduled for September 16.

Coimbatore: A female elephant that had sustained an injury after an iron wire became lodged around its left foreleg was found dead in the Sirumugai forest range in Coimbatore district on Tuesday.

During a patrol in the Pethikuttai–Uliyur reserve forest area near Sirumugai on September 2, the ailing elephant, aged around 10, was identified with an iron wire wrapped around its left foreleg. Due to the injury, the animal was reportedly finding it difficult to forage.

Subsequently, on September 6, a massive rescue and treatment operation involving 60 personnel, including forest staff from the Sirumugai and Periyanaickenpalayam ranges, elephant handlers and five veterinarians from the Anamalai and Sathyamangalam forest regions, was undertaken.

The elephant was administered antibiotics and had since been kept under close watch by forest staff.

However, on the morning of September 13, forest staff monitoring the elephant lost track of the animal, and the matter was brought to the attention of the District Forest Officer, Coimbatore Forest Division.

Following the instructions of the District Forest Officer, forest personnel commenced a search operation and found the elephant dead amid bushes at a place called Thamaraipalli.

Arrangements have been made to conduct a post-mortem examination on September 16. The examination is expected to help determine the cause of its death.
