First summer showers drench city

The predicted downpour across the district brought relief to residents, who were exhausted and fatigued due to the sweltering summer heat. The rains, experienced in patches in different parts of the district, are being brought about by a low pressure trough that is moving from Telengana to Southern Tamil Nadu through Coimbatore. The rains are likely to continue until Saturday.

With the district recording a maximum temperature of 38 deg C through Friday morning and relatively high humidity levels, most residents out and about suffered from exhaustion. At 6pm, dark clouds formed over the city, and around 6.40pm it began to rain. Though the amount of rainfall received will be known only on Saturday morning, the public were overjoyed to hear, smell and see the first showers. "Walking around outdoors finally feels bearable now," said Saraswathi D, a housewife. "Cooking has become a pleasure after almost a month," said food scientist, Srijanani S. In residential areas like R S Puram, couples were seen taking late evening strolls.

However, the joy seemed short lived, as a tree fall at 6pm damaged a power line in Pappanaickenpalayam. As a result, a large part of the city including Race Course, R S Puram, Trichy Road and even the suburbs like Veerakeralam saw a power cut for more than three hours.
