Functioning of new voting machines demonstrated

The district administration on Tuesday held a demonstration of a voter verified paper audit trail (VVPAT) attached electronic voting machine in Kannappan Nagar in Coimbatore North Assembly segment on Tuesday.

A release from the district administration said that the VVPAT machine helped voters check whom they had voted for as after the vote gets registered, the machine would generate a slip with details of the party voted for.

At the time of demonstration of the machine, Collector and District Election Officer Archana Patnaik, Election Commission of India observer Suba Gupta, Assistant Collector-trainee Grace Pachuau and other officers were present.

In Kavundampalayam, the observer, Ms. Gupta, inspected the poll officials pasting voter-awareness stickers on drinking water cans.

In two polling booths in K.K. Pudur the officials inspected facilities made for voters.

She carried out a similar exercise in the polling booths in Kavundampalayam Panchayat Union elementary school and another school there.

In Gandhipuram the officials oversaw the efforts to float a balloon carrying voter-awareness messages. With help from a textile store, the officials had floated the balloon that urged voters to vote without fail on May 16.

In Periyanaickenpalayam, the observer administered the pledge to students of Ramakrishna Vidyalaya who promised that they make their parents vote.

In Mettupalayam, she supervised the campaign to create awareness on the use of electronic voting machines.

District Revenue Officer T. Christuraj, Returning Officer, Coimbatore South, P. Gandhimathi and other senior officials were present.
