Western Region Gets Second Borewell Rescue Kit

The Western Region of the Fire and Rescue Services Department got its second borewell rescue kit to be used to rescue children stuck in borewells. It was sponsored by a Rotary Club here.

The department already had a borewell rescue kit that it obtained in March 2015.

Electronically operated

Both kits can be electronically operated to a depth of about 50 feet, beyond which it can be manually operated. The kits that weigh about 50 kgs have a monitor and control above the ground level, that monitors the rescue below ground.

The component that is sent underground has led lights and a camera, two way mics and speakers and a clamp for holding the baby .

Joint Director (JD) of Fire and Rescue Service, Western Region, M. Shahul Hameed said that there are nine districts covered in this region. “While both the kits are now in Coimbatore, we want to send one of the kits to Salem,” he said.

The JD said The Nilgiris, Coimbatore, Erode and Tirupur could share one kit while the one at Salem could be used in that district as well as Namakkal, Dharmapuri and Krishnagiri. Dindigul could share the kit that Madurai already has.

The Department personnel said happily that there were no incidents of children stuck in the borewells in this region for about a year.
