Police to send Amnesty event video for forensic test, no arrests for now

Bengaluru: Video footage of the Amnesty event at United Theological College will be sent to the Forensic Sciences Laboratory to check for its authenticity, senior police officers said.

"We want to be sure on the slogans raised and words used.Trouble began at the end of the programme when Kashmir based youths accused the Army of atrocities in the Valley," police said, adding, "There will be no arrests as of now."

Investigating officials said they are collecting details of backgrounds, particularly of the Kashmiri participants of `Broken Families'. "We are seeking a report on these families from Army officials, and taking statements from other participants, panel members and the audience," police said. A Bengaluru city police press release said no permission was sought or given for the Saturday event as it was an indoor event. Investigation of the case was entrusted to the assistant commissioner of police, JC Nagar.

"Towards the end of the Amnesty event on Saturday, a group of persons among the audience raised slogans seeking `azaadi'. When the situation threatened to go out of hand, the organizers suspended the programme and police dispersed the people who had gathered," the statement said.

Police officers said they had asked for a video of the event from the organizers and are looking into the sedition case against JNU student activist Kanhaiya Kumar and various observations of the Supreme Court on the issue of sedition, to evolve a plan of action.

What is sedition?

Sedition means conduct or speech inciting people to rebel against the authority of a state or monarch.

Section 124-A of the Indian Penal Code dealing with `Sedition', says: "Whoever, by words, either spoken or written, or by signs, or by visible representation, or otherwise, brings or attempts to bring into hatred or contempt, or excites or attempts to excite disaffection towards the Government established by law in India, shall be punished with life imprisonment."
