Collector initiates a five-day exclusive sanitation training programme


A five-day training programme has been initiated for a 60 member team by the Rural Development Sector.

The programme aims towards upliftment of sanitation and hygienic standards at all rural areas of the city. The members under the training programme will impart their knowledge to the people at rural areas to improvise and practice sanitation standards and obliterate open defecation practice.

The training programme was flagged off at Sri Krishna College today by the District Collector T.N.Hariharan. 



While addressing the gathering the District Collector mentioned that there are totally 228 Panchayats, out of which 87 Panchayats were installed with toilet facilities, last year. The practice of open defecation has completely been eradicated at those 87 panchayats. 41 Panchayats have been earmarked for toilet installation drive, 56,615 houses will be provided with adequate sanitary facilities by the end of this year. 

Under the Swachh Bharat Mission and Mahatma Gandhi Rural Employment Scheme, 33 Panchayats will be provided with toilets by August 2016, 32 Panchayats by October 2016, 32 panchayats by January 2017 and the rest 41 panchayats by March 2017. 

The 60 members selected for the training from the city would obtain training from experts from National level primary sanitation centre along with the UNICEF. The District Collector also insisted on the significance of building toilets at rural areas, especially for the safety of Women. These initiative of building toilets all over Tamil Nadu is also a part of mission 2023 proposed by Chief Minister J. Jayalalitha, involving self-help women groups to build toilets at needy places. The Collector also ensured that soon Coimbatore will emerge as a clean city without open defecations.
