Ganapathi Case: CID Gives Report Before Deadline

A Bengaluru CID team is reported to have given a clean chit to former minister KJ George and IPS officers Pronab Mohanty and AM Prasad in the suicide of deputy superintendent of police MK Ganapathi.

The team submitted its inquiry report to a Madikeri court on Saturday, two days ahead of the deadline.

In an interview to a TV channel a few hours before hanging himself in a Madikeri lodge on July 7th, the 51year-old officer had said George, Mohanty and Prasad should be held responsible if something happened to him. He accused his senior officers of hounding him. Both denied this.

Lack of evidence and witnesses weakened the investigation, during which the CID team spoke to more than 70 persons. Among those who the CID team spoke with were George, Mohanty, Prasad, ADGP Raghavendra Auradkar, Ganapathi's wife Pavana, his father and brother. Auradkar reportedly told the panel that in 2014 Ganapathi, then posted at the Rajagopalnagar police station, Bengaluru, was suspended for not following the standard operating procedure after money was recovered from a thief. Ganapathi had allegedly pocketed some of the money . He was reinstated a month later.

The 535-page report is said to have mentioned the Madiwala encounter case and the Mangaluru church incidents when Ganapathi was officer incharge. Local Christian leader Vincent informed the committee that Ganapathi contacted him regarding a promotion he wanted.

On Friday, Ganapathi's father K Kushalappa and his brother K Machaiah approached the high court demanding a CBI inquiry. They said they suspect foul play because Ganapathi was not a person who would kill himself. Ganapathi's suicide two days after Chikkamagaluru Rural DSP Kalappa Handibag committed suicide in Belagavi district -had raised a political storm in Karnataka.
