Helicopter crashed near Moscow killing three

Three people have died after a helicopter belonging to the Russian Emergency Situations Ministry crashed near Moscow, the ministry announced on Thursday, reports Radio Free Europe Radio Liberty, writes News.ro.

The Mi-8 helicopter crashed on Wednesday evening during some workouts, says the same source.

The two black boxes of the helicopter were recovered the night of Wednesday to Thursday in the wreckage and sent to be analysed by the Aviation Federal Committee, aviation officials announced on Thursday.

The twin-engine Mi-8 helicopters entered the service in the late 60 and are used by military and civilian operators both in Russia and in former Soviet republics, but also in the world.

Among the main causes of previous Mi-8 accidents are poor maintenance and failure to comply with safety rules.

Aboard the helicopter was Roman Frolov, head of the Jukovski aviation rescue centre and two other men, according to The Associated Press.

‘Three people are believed to have died…According to preliminary data, the Mil Mi-8 helicopter disintegrated on impact and cannot be restored,’ said the source responsible for the emergency services.
The helicopter crashed in a forest located about ten kilometres south-east of the Russian capital.

Immediate causes of the collapse were unclear, but some publications wrote that it would be about an engine fault.

The Russian Ministry for Emergency situations deplores the death of Frolov, who among other things participated in numerous missions in firefighting the vegetation.

The Mil Mi-8 is a helicopter with a medium twin-turbine, was designed originally by the Soviet Union, and is now produced by Russia. It is not only used as a transport helicopter, but also as an airborne command post, an armed gunship, and as a reconnaissance platform.
