Local body polls in Tamil Nadu on October 17, 19

Tamil Nadu will go to the local body polls in two phases on October 17 and 19, State Election Commissioner P. Seetharaman announced here on Sunday.

Addressing a press conference, Mr. Seetharaman said that the notification for the elections would be issued on Monday and nominations could be filed from the same day.

Counting of votes would be held on October 21. Following the announcement of elections, the Model Code of Conduct came into force on Sunday.

Nominations can be filed until October 3 and they would be scrutinised on October 4. Withdrawal of nominations could be made on October 6. All the elected candidates would assume charge on October 24. Local bodies under the Greater Chennai Corporation would go to the polls during the second phase on October 19, he said.

The indirect polls for posts such as Mayor, Deputy Mayor, Chairperson and Vice-Chairperson of Municipalities and similar posts in rural local bodies would be held on November 2, he added.

A total of 1,31,794 posts, including 1,18,974 in rural local bodies and 12,820 posts in urban local bodies would be filled in the direct polls.

A total of 13,362 posts in rural local bodies and 1,328 posts in urban local bodies would be filled up through indirect polls.
