IIT students test the water with ‘Nanins’

A small plane-like robot module floats in the swimming pool at IIT-Madras, as groups of students fiddle with their laptops outside the pool manipulating its functions.

Students of IIT-Madras, Kanpur, and Rourkee, came together for a workshop with students from ETH Zurich to complete ‘Nanins’, a robot developed at the Autonomous Systems Lab of ETH Zurich that could help prevent waterborne diseases. The Nanins will help measure properties, such as dissolved oxygen, reduced oxygen, pH, temperature, and conductivity, said Stefan Bertschi, engineer, Autonomous Systems Lab.

“As an example, the students will have to control the robot. There is a programming part. They also designed the wings from scratch, because they have to learn about ergonomics. We had less than four days and the results are impressive,” Mr. Bertschi said. The robots were brought by ETH Zurich, while the workshop participants developed the wings to help glide the robot in the water. The workshop was organised by Swissnex India at IIT-Madras.
