Coimbatore: GKNM Hospital has successfully performed Endoscopic Submucosal Dissection (ESD), an advanced minimally invasive procedure, on 10 patients with large and complex colorectal lesions, marking a significant milestone in gastrointestinal care.
The technique enables doctors to remove selected lesions while preserving the affected bowel and rectal structures, potentially helping patients avoid major surgery. Among the cases treated was a patient with a large rectal lesion, which was successfully removed without the need for abdominoperineal resection (APR), a major operation involving the removal of the rectum and anus, or a permanent colostomy.
The medical team also removed a large lesion with high-grade dysplasia, a precancerous cellular abnormality associated with an increased risk of progression to cancer, along with other complex colorectal lesions. According to the hospital, the procedures were completed without major complications.
The successful outcomes highlight the potential of ESD to reduce the need for extensive surgery in appropriately selected patients, helping preserve organ function and support a better quality of life. The procedure also allows lesions to be removed in one piece, facilitating detailed pathological examination and helping doctors determine whether further treatment is required.
The achievement was made possible through careful patient selection, advanced endoscopic equipment and a multidisciplinary approach involving gastroenterologists, pathologists and radiologists. Their coordinated efforts in assessing and treating these complex cases mark an important advancement in the hospital’s gastrointestinal care services.
