Coimbatore: Dr. Ragupathy Veluswamy, Chief Executive Officer of GKNM Hospital, Coimbatore, has been conferred the Distinguished Fellowship of the American Association for Physician Leadership (DFAAPL), one of the organisation's highest honours, in recognition of his contributions to healthcare management and physician leadership.
The fellowship was presented by Dr. Claude Brunson, President and CEO of the AAPL, at its Annual Leadership Conference held in Scottsdale, Arizona, on October 22.
Established in 1975, the AAPL is a professional organisation dedicated to developing physicians as healthcare leaders and executives. Its Distinguished Fellowship recognises doctors who have made significant contributions to medical management and physician leadership at local, state and international levels, particularly in advancing healthcare quality and patient outcomes.
Dr. Ragupathy Veluswamy has been associated with the AAPL's international leadership initiatives for several years and was featured among Indian physician leaders in its publication, Physician Leadership Around the World.
In his acceptance speech, he emphasised that clinical expertise must be complemented by effective leadership to deliver better healthcare. He highlighted the importance of developing capable, compassionate and ethical physician leaders to strengthen healthcare institutions and improve care delivery.
Reflecting on his professional journey, Dr. Ragupathy Veluswamy said he began his career as a paediatrician in New Jersey, where he spent more than two decades in clinical practice before transitioning to healthcare leadership. He subsequently served as Vice-President of Quality and Chief Medical Officer at hospitals in New Jersey and Pennsylvania.
He recalled returning to India in 2015 to take over as CEO of GKNM Hospital in Coimbatore, where he led its transformation into a 750-bed multispecialty tertiary-care institution. He said developing capable physician leaders in India remained a priority, particularly as the country continued to emerge as a major healthcare destination.
Expressing gratitude for the fellowship, Dr. Ragupathy Veluswamy acknowledged the mentorship and guidance he had received through his association with the AAPL. He reaffirmed his commitment to nurturing the next generation of physician leaders through practical training, education and collaboration with the organisation. He also encouraged fellow physicians and aspiring healthcare executives to embrace continuous learning, lead responsibly and place patients at the centre of every decision.
