Coimbatore: The Suez 24*7 Drinking Water Supply Project in Coimbatore has reached a significant milestone, with 57% of the work now complete. The project, aimed at providing round-the-clock water supply to the city, has faced delays due to various challenges including pipeline work, tank construction, and structural adjustments.
Corporation Commissioner M Sivaguru Prabhakaran emphasized the importance of expediting the project. He warned that penalties would be imposed if contractors fail to complete the work promptly, including the restoration of roads.
The commissioner highlighted the current status of the project, detailing the pending works. The ambitious project includes the construction of 75km of feeder mines, 1,745km of distribution lines, 1.50 lakh house connections, 98 District Metered Areas (DMA), and 33 service reservoirs. To date, only about 47% of the feeder mines and 75% of the distribution lines have been completed. Additionally, 78,676 house service connections are in place.
Officials noted that 7% of the DMAs are currently receiving continuous water supply, while 27% are getting an intermittent supply. Efforts are underway to extend this to the remaining DMAs, and work on all service reservoirs is ongoing.
