25 Cases Registered for Drunk Driving in Coimbatore

Coimbatore: The Coimbatore City Police Department has issued a statement on September 2, detailing a special drive conducted to curb drunk driving in the city.

The police carried out checks on omni bus drivers operating from Coimbatore to major cities like Chennai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Thiruvananthapuram, and other parts of Tamil Nadu. The operation aimed to detect if these drivers were under the influence of alcohol while operating their vehicles.

During the checks that began on the evening of September 1, 2024, 95 omni buses were inspected. Two bus drivers were found to be under the influence of alcohol. The police immediately informed the bus owners and arranged for alternative drivers to operate these buses.

Bus owners and managers were warned to ensure that drivers are not under the influence of alcohol before allowing them to operate the vehicles.

Additionally, the Coimbatore City Traffic Police formed 17 teams led by Assistant Inspectors and constables to conduct special vehicle checks across the city on the night of September 1, 2024. As a result of this operation, 25 cases were registered under the Motor Vehicles Act for drunk driving. Among the offenders were drivers of 5 luxury cars and 4 high-end two-wheelers.

The police statement emphasizes their commitment to road safety and warns against the dangers of drunk driving. The department has assured that such special drives will continue to ensure the safety of commuters and pedestrians in Coimbatore.
