Minor Sexual Assault Case Accused Shot in Leg After Attack on Woman Inspector in Coimbatore

A man among two arrested in connection with the alleged abduction and sexual assault of a minor girl in Coimbatore was shot in the leg after allegedly attacking a woman police inspector with a sickle during weapon recovery, police said.

Coimbatore:. In a self-defence measure, a 28-year-old man arrested in connection with the alleged abduction and sexual assault of a 14-year-old girl was shot in the leg by the police after he allegedly attacked a woman police inspector with a sickle and attempted to assault other police personnel during the recovery of the weapon, the Coimbatore City Police said.

According to the police, a complaint was received at around 7.30 p.m. on September 12 that a 14-year-old girl had allegedly been abducted on a two-wheeler and subjected to sexual assault.

The South All Women Police Station registered a case under relevant legal provisions and launched an investigation.

During the inquiry, the police found that two men — Santhosh (24) and Thavasi (28) — had allegedly abducted the girl on a two-wheeler and taken her to a house in the Kanjikonampalayam area, where she was allegedly subjected to sexual assault.

Both the accused were subsequently arrested and legal proceedings were initiated against them, the police said. The victim was sent to hospital for a medical examination.

Inspector allegedly attacked during weapon recovery

As part of the investigation, Thavasi allegedly informed the police that he would identify the place where he had concealed a sickle that was allegedly used to threaten the girl.

A police team led by Inspector Suvarnavalli took him to the location to recover the weapon. According to the police, Thavasi suddenly took out the concealed sickle and allegedly attacked Inspector Suvarnavalli, causing injuries to her.

The police said that Sub-Inspector Silambarasan, who was part of the security team, repeatedly warned Thavasi after he allegedly continued to pose a threat and attempted to attack the police officers again with the sickle.

As he paid no heed to the warnings, the police opened fire as a measure of self-defence to prevent an immediate threat to the officers, the police said.

Thavasi, who sustained an injury to his left leg, was provided immediate medical assistance and taken by ambulance to the Coimbatore Government Medical College Hospital for treatment. The injured inspector was also admitted to hospital and is undergoing treatment.

The police said appropriate legal action is being initiated against Santhosh and Thavasi and further investigations are underway.
