A man was arrested for allegedly attacking the husband of a DMK councillor with a sickle and severing his right hand following a long-standing land dispute in Odaikulam Panchayat near Pollachi in Coimbatore district. The Anaimalai police are investigating the incident.
Coimbatore: Coimbatore: A man was arrested by the Anaimalai police for allegedly attacking the husband of a DMK councillor with a sickle and severing his right hand following a long-standing dispute over land boundaries near Odaikulam in the Pollachi region of Coimbatore district on Wednesday, September 23.
Vijayavani serves as the councillor representing Ward 13 of Odaikulam Town Panchayat near Anaimalai. Her husband, Murugan (52), is also reportedly associated with the DMK as a local party functionary.
According to reports, a long-standing dispute had existed between Murugan’s family and a neighbouring resident, identified as Aaruchamy, over the boundaries and ownership of land near their homes.
On Wednesday, an argument reportedly broke out between Murugan and Aaruchamy over the land dispute near the Village Administrative Officer (VAO) office in Odaikulam Town Panchayat.
Following the argument, Aaruchamy allegedly took out a sharp sickle that he had concealed in a bag and attacked Murugan repeatedly. When Murugan attempted to flee, Aaruchamy reportedly chased him and attacked him again, resulting in the severing of his right hand. Murugan collapsed at the scene with severe injuries and blood loss.
Upon hearing his cries, nearby residents and members of the public rushed to his aid and transported him to Vettaikaranpudur Government Hospital. After receiving first aid, he was referred to Coimbatore Government Medical College Hospital (CMCH), where he was admitted to the intensive care unit for further treatment.
After receiving information about the incident, the Anaimalai police registered a case and arrested Aaruchamy, who had allegedly attempted to flee the scene. Further investigation is underway.
The incident, which occurred near a town panchayat office in an area with significant public movement, has caused shock and concern in the Pollachi and Anaimalai regions.
