As part of the Coimbatore Corporation’s awareness initiative “My Street; My Responsibility,” an awareness drive to sensitise residents on keeping their surroundings clean was recently launched by the civic body. Kolam competitions were planned in every ward to create awareness among residents about the importance of four-way waste segregation.
Following this, traditional kolams are taking on a new purpose in Coimbatore, with residents using the art form to spread awareness about the importance of segregating household waste at source into four categories — wet waste, dry waste, sanitary waste and special waste.
In the Central Zone, the initiative was held on 8th Street in Kannappan Nagar, Sanganur, under Ward 32. Residents were sensitised through kolams on the need to separate wet waste, dry waste, sanitary waste and special waste. Prizes were also distributed as part of the awareness programme.
Ward 80’s Ashok Nagar was another area where the Corporation conducted the same initiative, encouraging residents to use kolams to communicate the importance of source segregation. Public Health Committee Chairman P. Mariselvan, Assistant Commissioner Ganeshan, Zonal Health Officer Gunasekaran and Corporation officials participated in the programme.
At MG Colony in Ward 40, residents also participated in the kolam-based awareness campaign. Their efforts to promote four-way waste segregation were recognised by the Corporation, which distributed prizes along with waste bins and saplings to encourage continued participation in the cleanliness initiative.
The initiative is aimed at making waste segregation a part of everyday household practices by combining public awareness with a familiar traditional art form.
