SimpliCity News Team · 1 min ago
Coimbatore: From fogging and cleanliness drives to awareness campaigns among residents, the Coimbatore Corporation has been taking several measures to prevent dengue. Taking the message to youngsters in a more engaging way, the civic body organised a unique dengue awareness cricket match at the cricket ground in the Kumarasamy Lake area of R.S. Puram on Thursday.
Before the match, all participants took a dengue prevention pledge. The two teams were given an awareness theme, with one representing Aedes mosquitoes and the other representing public health measures. Placards highlighting common mosquito-breeding sites such as coconut shells, discarded tyres and containers were displayed during the toss, underlining the importance of preventing water stagnation and keeping surroundings clean.
The seven-over match saw the Public Health team score 38 runs for five wickets, setting the Aedes Mosquito team a target of 39. The Aedes team reached the target in 6.4 overs, scoring 39 runs for three wickets to win the match. Public Health Department Manager P. Satheeskumar was named Player of the Match, while Health Inspector and team captain Abinesh received the winning trophy.
By taking dengue awareness to the cricket pitch, the Corporation sought to connect with youngsters through a sport that enjoys wide popularity among them. The initiative also attracted spectators and gave them an opportunity to learn about dengue prevention.
The Corporation said similar awareness cricket matches would be organised at grounds in schools, colleges and other public spaces in the coming days as part of its continued efforts to intensify dengue prevention measures and work towards a dengue-free Coimbatore.
