Coimbatore Court Sentences Man to Life Imprisonment for Beating Wife to Death

Coimbatore: A 58-year-old man has been sentenced to life imprisonment by a Coimbatore court for beating his wife to death in 2016. The court also imposed a fine of Rs 5,000 on the accused, Murugan of Ajjanur, Sundapalayam.

According to the Coimbatore City Police, Murugan had allegedly assaulted and subjected his wife Mallika to physical abuse while under the influence of alcohol. On September 22, 2016, he allegedly attacked her on the head. She was subsequently taken to a hospital after he claimed that she had suffered a seizure and fallen down.

Mallika died despite treatment. The death was initially investigated as suspicious, and during the subsequent police investigation, it was established that she had allegedly been assaulted by Murugan.

Following the investigation, Vadavalli police registered a murder case and filed a chargesheet before the court in 2016. The trial was conducted before the IV Additional Sessions Court in Coimbatore.

Based on the evidence and documents presented by the prosecution, the court found that the charges against Murugan had been established beyond reasonable doubt.

On October 5, 2026, the court sentenced Murugan to life imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs 5,000. The court further ordered that he undergo an additional three months of imprisonment if he failed to pay the fine.

The senior police officials appreciated Special Sub-Inspector Geetha, Head Constable Suresh and Woman Police Constable Roslin Sweety for their work in the case.
