Coimbatore: Kuniyamuthur police have arrested nine members of an alleged criminal gang suspected of being involved in a series of serious offences, including robbery, theft and murder across Tamil Nadu.
According to police, the gang was involved in robbing college students at knifepoint in the Kuniyamuthur area in December 2025. The suspects allegedly intercepted students and threatened them with knives before fleeing with cash and jewellery.
When a police patrol team attempted to apprehend the suspects based on information about the incidents, the gang members allegedly threw chilli powder at the police from inside their car and escaped.
The gang subsequently travelled to Theni district, where they allegedly broke into the house of a Special Sub-Inspector (SSI) and escaped with around 100 sovereigns of gold jewellery.
Following the robbery, the suspects allegedly fled to Delhi to evade the police and remained there for several months.
Police said the gang returned to Tamil Nadu by flight last month. After their return, they allegedly travelled to the Keezhadi area of Sivaganga district, where they are accused of murdering a man before returning to Coimbatore.
Following the series of crimes, a special police team was formed on the directions of the Coimbatore City Police Commissioner, Dr. N. Kannan, IPS, to trace the suspects.
Kuniyamuthur police subsequently intensified surveillance using mobile phone numbers and other tracking inputs. Based on the investigation, police traced the gang members who were allegedly hiding in Coimbatore and arrested nine persons, including the alleged gang leader.
Police seized knives, vehicles and jewellery allegedly linked to the offences from the arrested suspects.
The nine accused were produced before a court and subsequently remanded in Coimbatore Central Prison.
