Coimbatore: The heavy rainfall in the Nilgiris has triggered a sharp rise in the water level of Pillur Dam, a major drinking water source for residents of Coimbatore and Tiruppur districts, with more than 10 drinking water schemes depending on the dam.
The dam's water level stood at 89 feet at 6 am on Wednesday. Heavy rainfall continued in several parts of the Nilgiris during this period, with 51 mm recorded at Kundha, 67 mm at Kettai, 35 mm at Parali, 116 mm in the Billur Dam area and 16 mm at Avalanche.
With inflows into the dam continuing to increase, the water level rose rapidly to 94 feet by 7.50 am. The inflow was reported to be between 5,000 and 6,000 cusecs, while around 6,000 cusecs was being released into the Bhavani River.
With the inflow expected to continue increasing, the dam is likely to reach its full level shortly, following which surplus water is expected to be released into the Bhavani River.
