Coimbatore: Ahead of the Northeast monsoon, the Coimbatore Corporation has turned its primary school classrooms into platforms for environmental awareness, enlisting students to spread the message of rainwater harvesting and water conservation.
As part of the drive, Corporation schools across the city have organised exhibitions and educational activities highlighting the importance of conserving every drop of rainwater. Students created miniature models of rainwater harvesting structures and displayed placards explaining their significance, turning environmental lessons into engaging, hands-on learning experiences.
At Rathinapuri Corporation Primary School, which falls under the Central Zone of the Coimbatore Corporation, an awareness exhibition and competitions on rainwater harvesting were held on October 8. Ward 31 Councillor Vairamurugan, Corporation Education Supervisor Poongodi, the school headmistress, students and others participated in the programme.
Primary school students at Ramasamy Nagar Corporation School also conducted a similar exhibition, showcasing rainwater harvesting models to highlight the importance of conserving rainwater and encouraging the public to adopt sustainable water management practices.
Meanwhile, students of Peelamedu Corporation Primary School organised an exhibition on four-way waste segregation, using models and displays to explain the importance of separating waste at source and promoting responsible waste management.
The initiatives are intended to take environmental awareness beyond school premises, encouraging students to carry the message of rainwater harvesting and responsible waste disposal to their families and the wider community.
Corporation councillors and education officials visited the schools, interacted with students and encouraged them to become ambassadors of water conservation by spreading awareness in their neighbourhoods.
