Coimbatore: Ahead of the Northeast monsoon, Coimbatore Corporation Commissioner Katta Ravi Teja, IAS, led a preparedness exercise on October 9 at Kurichi Lake to assess the readiness of emergency response teams and demonstrate rescue operations aimed at safeguarding lives during monsoon-related disasters.
The mock drill was conducted with the participation of around 45 personnel from the Fire and Rescue Services Department. The exercise focused on familiarising personnel with specialised rescue equipment and techniques required to respond to emergencies, including flooding and other disaster situations.
Officials demonstrated the use of life detectors, victim-location cameras, hydraulic cutters, spreaders, combination tools, portable inflatable lighting systems, rubber boats, hydraulic door openers, thermal imaging cameras and underwater scanners. Other equipment displayed included rope bridges, full-body harnesses, petrol-driven concrete cutters, electric drills with breakers and various types of stretchers.
The demonstration also covered the use of locally available materials, including banana trunks, planks and ropes, in emergency rescue operations. These demonstrations highlighted practical methods that could assist rescue teams in responding to difficult situations and protecting people during disasters.
District Fire Officer K. Ganesh, Assistant District Officer P. Alagarsamy and other Fire and Rescue Services personnel participated in the exercise, along with Corporation officials and staff from various departments.
