‘Vetri Tamilagam’ Action Plan and Monsoon Preparedness Discussed at Second Regional Conference in Coimbatore

Coimbatore: The second regional conference on implementing the “Vetri Tamilagam – Vision Document” action plan and preparations for the northeast monsoon was held at the CODISSIA complex in Coimbatore on Thursday, October 15.

The conference was chaired by Minister for Rural Development-Panchayat Raj and Water Resources N. Anand. It reviewed ongoing rural development works, proposed activities under the Vetri Tamilagam Vision Document and precautionary measures for the northeast monsoon across 11 districts: Coimbatore, Dharmapuri, Erode, Krishnagiri, Namakkal, Salem, Nilgiris, Tiruppur, Dindigul, Karur and Tiruchirappalli.

Addressing the meeting, Anand stressed the need to expedite planned works under the TN-VETRI rural development initiative and the VB-GRAM (G) livelihood scheme to improve rural livelihoods and strengthen basic infrastructure.

Ahead of the northeast monsoon, the minister instructed officials to closely monitor low-lying areas, water bodies, canals and stormwater drains, and ensure that desilting and maintenance works are completed to facilitate the smooth flow of rainwater. He also emphasised intensified measures to prevent dengue and other infectious diseases, maintain public cleanliness, repair damaged roads promptly, ensure uninterrupted access to safe drinking water and address public complaints without delay.

Anand further directed departments to coordinate their efforts, prepare for emergency response and ensure that government welfare schemes reach eligible beneficiaries. He stressed transparency, quality and timely completion of development works, while urging officials to prioritise public safety and respond swiftly to rain-related emergencies.

The conference was attended by Additional Collectors, Project Directors of the District Rural Development Agencies (DRDAs), Joint Directors of Mahalir Thittam, Executive Engineers, Assistant Executive Engineers and Block Development Officers.

The first regional conference of the Rural Development and Panchayat Raj Department was held at Kalaivanar Arangam in Chennai on October 8, 2026, under the chairmanship of Minister N Anand.
