Coimbatore: Karamadai recorded the highest rainfall in Coimbatore district, receiving 120 mm between October 18 and 6.30 am on October 19, according to data released by the Tamil Nadu Disaster Risk Reduction Agency.
Periyanaickenpalayam recorded the second-highest rainfall at 96 mm, followed by Thudiyalur with 85.20 mm. Bogampatti received 60 mm, while Madukkarai recorded 49.60 mm during the reporting period.
Heavy rainfall over the past 24 hours inundated roads and highways across Coimbatore city and its suburbs, disrupting traffic at multiple locations. The suburban areas recorded comparatively higher rainfall than several parts of the city, with Karamadai, Periyanaickenpalayam and Thudiyalur among the wettest locations.
Among other areas in the district, Othakkalmandapam recorded 20 mm, Sarkar Samakulam and Somanur received 13.20 mm each, while Annur recorded 10.80 mm. Chikkadasampalayam and Naickenpalayam each received 24 mm.
Within Coimbatore city and its surrounding areas, Vadavalli recorded 32.80 mm, Vellalore received 16.40 mm, Thondamuthur recorded 15.60 mm and Singanallur received 4 mm.
The rainfall has brought relief to farmers, as Northeast monsoon showers play a crucial role in replenishing groundwater resources and supporting agricultural activities. However, farmers in Mettupalayam, Annur and Karamadai have expressed concerns that persistent rainfall could damage banana plantations and affect crop yields.
The India Meteorological Department has forecast heavy to very heavy rainfall in Coimbatore district, the Nilgiris and other parts of the Kongu region over the coming days, raising the possibility of further showers.
With more rainfall expected, civic and municipal authorities are stepping up monsoon preparedness measures, including clearing waterlogged areas and improving drainage to minimise disruption to residents and commuters.
