Coimbatore: The Coimbatore City Municipal Corporation (CCMC) has intensified preparedness measures to minimise waterlogging and safeguard public safety, with heavy rainfall forecast over the next three days amid the Northeast Monsoon.
Following instructions from Minister for Backward Classes Welfare V. Sampathkumar, a review meeting was held on Monday (October 19) at the Integrated Command and Control Centre (ICCC) meeting hall in the Corporation auditorium at RS Puram. The meeting, chaired by Corporation Commissioner Katta Ravi Teja, focused on precautionary measures and identifying vulnerable areas ahead of the anticipated rainfall.
The Commissioner directed assistant commissioners, engineers, health officers and other officials to remain on high alert and ensure that adequate manpower, vehicles, suction pumps, motors and tree-cutting machinery were kept ready to respond to rain-related emergencies.
He instructed officials to continuously monitor locations prone to water stagnation, particularly areas that experienced flooding following Sunday's rainfall, and ensure that relief operations were carried out promptly wherever necessary.
Assistant engineers were also directed to inspect streetlights across the city to ensure their proper functioning during the rainy season. Stormwater drains must be checked for blockages and cleared to facilitate the uninterrupted flow of rainwater. Officials were further instructed to inspect rainwater harvesting structures to ensure their proper functioning.
With the risk of mosquito-borne diseases increasing during the rainy season, officials were instructed to intensify mosquito-control measures and undertake thorough cleaning of affected areas. Waste and debris must be removed promptly after floodwater recedes to maintain sanitation and prevent mosquito breeding.
Katta Ravi Teja also directed officials to ensure that designated relief camps were kept ready to accommodate residents in case of emergencies. The camps must have essential facilities, including drinking water, food, medicines and electricity, to provide safe shelter for people affected by heavy rainfall.
The review meeting was attended by Deputy Commissioners K. Kumaresan and R. Saraswathi, City Chief Engineer Vijayakumar, City Health Officer Dr. Subash Gandhi, zonal assistant commissioners, executive engineers, zonal health officers, assistant executive engineers, assistant engineers, health inspectors and other Corporation officials.
