Stranded on Waterlogged Streets: VKV Avenue Residents in Kavundampalayam Constituency Warn of Protest

Coimbatore: Hundreds of streets across Coimbatore remained waterlogged after rains lashed the city and its suburbs on Tuesday afternoon, disrupting normal life in several neighbourhoods, with residents in multiple localities warning of protests over the lack of lasting remedial measures.
While the Coimbatore City Municipal Corporation has been working round the clock to clear stagnant water using suction pumps, residents of areas plagued by recurring waterlogging are demanding permanent solutions as the northeast monsoon gathers pace. With repeated spells of rain bringing familiar hardships, the frustration has only grown.
One such locality is VKV Avenue Phase 9 in Somaiyanur, under the Kavundampalayam Assembly constituency, where residents have expressed serious concerns over persistent waterlogging following rainfall. They alleged that repeated appeals to the concerned officials have failed to yield a permanent solution, leaving them to endure the same hardships after every spell of rain.
According to the residents, stagnant water has made it difficult for senior citizens and children to access the streets, severely disrupting their daily lives. They also alleged that snakes and other reptiles have entered their homes, posing serious safety concerns for residents, particularly children and elderly people.
The residents further questioned how an ambulance or other emergency support vehicle could reach their locality if a medical emergency arose. They said the waterlogged streets made them feel as though they were living in an isolated area within the city, cut off from essential access and emergency services.
Despite submitting several requests to the concerned authorities, no effective measures have reportedly been taken to resolve the issue permanently. Frustrated by the continued inconvenience, the residents warned that they would stage a protest on the streets if immediate and lasting action was not taken to address the waterlogging problem.
