Coimbatore: The Department of Microbiology of Karpagam Academy of Higher Education organised a tuberculosis (TB) awareness programme at Sulakkal village in Pollachi on October 28, 2026, under the Ni-kshay Mitra initiative.
The initiative was launched by the Government of India in September 2022 as part of the Pradhan Mantri TB Mukt Bharat Abhiyaan. It seeks to accelerate India's TB elimination efforts by encouraging community participation and building a support system for tuberculosis patients through a whole-of-society approach.
A team comprising 31 students and four faculty members visited the village and distributed awareness pamphlets to residents. The students also interacted with community members, explaining the causes and transmission of tuberculosis, preventive measures and the importance of early diagnosis and appropriate treatment.
The programme aimed to disseminate reliable health information, promote awareness about tuberculosis at the grassroots level and encourage community participation in the country's efforts to eliminate the disease.
