Coimbatore: Dry conditions have largely persisted across Coimbatore district, with only 3 mm of rainfall recorded in the 24-hour period ending at 7.30 am on November 1, even as the weather department has forecast a possible return of rain over the coming days.
The district recorded an average rainfall of just 0.13 mm during this period, according to the latest rainfall report. This comes after a spell of heavy rainfall last week, following which dry conditions have largely continued across the district.
Among the rainfall stations, Mettupalayam recorded the highest rainfall of 2 mm, classified as very light rainfall, while Thondamuthur received 1 mm. The remaining stations, including Coimbatore city, Sulur, Perur, Pollachi, Valparai and Anaimalai, reported no rainfall during the period.
While the city continues to experience a dry spell, light showers in the Siruvani catchment areas have brought some relief. The catchment areas received nearly 20 mm of rainfall, contributing to a rise in the Siruvani Dam water level to around 39.92 feet.
Meanwhile, an earlier forecast had indicated isolated heavy rainfall in Coimbatore and the Nilgiris on November 2, with the heavy-rain warning continuing for the Nilgiris on November 3. However, the latest India Meteorological Department city forecast for Coimbatore indicates partly cloudy skies with the possibility of moderate rain or thunderstorms on November 2 and 3. The Nilgiris is also expected to receive showers during these two days.
The anticipated change in weather comes after several days of relatively dry conditions across the district following last week's rainfall.
