Coimbatore: Ahead of Deepavali, the sale of the 'Vetri Special Vegetable Kit' priced at a subsidised Rs. 100 was launched in Coimbatore on Thursday, November 5, 2026, with District Collector Pawan Kumar Giriyappanar distributing the kits to the public.
The initiative was launched statewide by Tamil Nadu Minister for Cooperation V. Gandhiraj, with the kits containing 10 varieties of vegetables being sold through 218 cooperative shops across Tamil Nadu. In Coimbatore, the Collector personally took part in the launch, handing over the vegetable kits to residents.
The initiative aims to ensure that the public gets fresh and quality vegetables required for festive cooking at prices more affordable than prevailing market rates. The sale of the special vegetable kits will continue for three days, until November 7.
Each kit weighs between 2.55 kg and 2.6 kg and contains 500 grams each of onion and tomato, 250 grams each of brinjal and potato, 200 grams each of carrot and beans, 100 grams each of green chillies and lemons, 50 grams of ginger and one coconut.
Speaking to reporters after the launch, Giriyappanar said the initiative had been introduced to benefit the public during the Deepavali festival. The special kits will be available at 13 cooperative stores across Coimbatore district, and he urged the public to make use of the scheme.
On the precautionary measures being taken to address the impact of heavy rainfall in the district, the Collector said continuous monitoring was being carried out in various areas ahead of the northeast monsoon. Waterlogging-prone locations had been identified, and steps were being taken to drain accumulated rainwater without delay.
With a rainfall alert in place for the next three days, all government departments are on alert and prepared to handle the monsoon situation, he added.
