Coimbatore: Rain disrupted Deepavali sales across Coimbatore city and its suburbs on Thursday, hitting traders and particularly street vendors just two days before the festival.
Vendors who had set up temporary stalls along roadsides were among the worst affected, as the rain hampered business during the crucial festive shopping period.
According to the Coimbatore District Rainfall Report, the district recorded 86.70 mm of rainfall, with an average of 3.77 mm, between 7.30 am on November 5 and 7.30 am on November 6. TNAU recorded the highest rainfall of 17.20 mm, followed by Pillur Dam at 13 mm, Annur at 10 mm, Thondamuthur at 8 mm, Podanur at 6.80 mm and Chinnakalar at 6 mm.
Meanwhile, the India Meteorological Department's Coimbatore forecast, dated November 6, indicates a possibility of moderate rain or thunderstorms on November 7 and 8. The department has also warned of thunderstorms accompanied by lightning on both days.
With more showers likely over the weekend, street vendors fear further disruption to Deepavali sales.
